A Christian – Possessed?

This is the first post in my series “Deliverance Foundations”

This is for my friend Archie, who essentially asked whether a Christian can have a demon.  I was going to answer him in a comment reply, but I realized it would be more effective as a blog post for two reasons:  (1) I’d probably start to type and realize that it was much longer than a normal comment reply, and would be better suited as a post; and (2) this way, others asking this question can be led here and have an answer.

I will say here also that although I am speaking through experience plus my understanding of Scripture, I respect others and their viewpoints.  If you, after reading, still believe that Christians can’t have demons, I won’t have a hissy fit.  It isn’t one of the ‘tenets’ of the faith, like Jesus being raised from the dead – so we can safely agree to disagree.  That being said, this one’s for you, Archie….

(BTW – this is a long post! Be warned!)

Can A Christian Be Possessed?

“Possession.”  A hard word – especially in light of the subject matter – demon possession.  But what do dictionaries say?  The word ‘possession’ has several meanings:

  •  The act or fact of possessing.
  • Ownership
  • The state of being dominated by or as if by evil spirits or by an obsession.
  • Anything owned or possessed.
  • Being controlled by passion or the supernatural.
  • In law,  actual holding or occupancy, either with or without rights of ownership.
  • Domination, actuation, or obsession by a feeling, idea, etc

I believe that the issue when it comes to ‘demon possession’ is confusion over which definition of the word appies.  Most people who say that Christians cannot be possessed take ‘possession’ to mean ‘ownership’.  They say, in essence, that as a child of God no Christian can be owned by the devil.  And they’re right.  God says in his word:

John 10:27-29 (King James Version)

27My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:

28And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

29My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.

Nothing we do can separate us from the Father’s love … it isn’t directly related, but it has a reference to demons so….

Romans 8:38-39 (King James Version)

38For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

39Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And,  one more Scripture – Isaiah 43:1, where ownership is solely claimed by God himself:

But now, this is what the LORD says—
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
       “Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have summoned you by name; you are mine.

No, ‘possession’ in the subject of this article speaks to one of the other definitions of ‘possession’, namely “Being controlled…” or “domination, actuation, or obsession …”

What the Bible shows is not that the person is ‘owned’ by demons, but is controlled, wholy or in part, by the demonic.

The Triune Nature of Man

Most believers would say that we are made up of three parts: body, soul and spirit.  Some point to Gen.  2:7 where all three elements are made reference to:

Genesis 2:7 (King James Version)

And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

There is also this Scripture:

1 Thessalonians 5:23
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spiritsoul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Some people have said that man is a spirit that has a soul and lives in a body.

The three parts of man

The three parts of man

When you are not yet saved, your spirit is dead in its sins:

Colossians 2:13 (King James Version)

 13And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;

And again

1 Peter 4:6 (King James Version)

For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

When you are a Christian, your spirit is resurrected, made alive (or ‘quickened’ (KJV) in Christ.

Ephesians 2:1
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

Ephesians 2:5
Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

1 Peter 3:18
For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

“But a Christian cannot have a demon!”

This is the ‘internal makeup’ of a Christian:

Born Again Man

Born Again Man

The spirit is renewed and resurrected! This makes you a ‘new creation in Christ’.  But –

Normally, if you had a broken foot before salvation, chances are you still have it afterwards right? (I am not discounting supernatural healings in this article. I am only saying what is generally accepted.)  If you had an issue with anger, chances are you still have that anger problem, and will have to work with the Spirit of God to get over it.

The fact is, evil spirits live mostly in the soul realm (emotions etc) and sometimes  manifest through the body.  This can happen even when the spirit has been renewed!

These issues in our lives are called ‘strongholds’… a well defended area that holds up against attack.

Strongholds weaken man

Strongholds weaken man

So although the Holy Spirit lives in your spirit, in the other areas of your life there are areas where Christ does not yet have full control. This is where the enemy has access.  Satan gains access through our soul – our emotions, mind, memory and will.

I think about it this way.

Think about an appartment building.  Each tenant has access to their own room, and each has their own key.  “Good” people can live in one part, and “evil” people can live in another part – but it is still the same building.  Even if the ownership of the appartment building changes hands, just because the new owner gets the title deed does not automatically eject the ‘evil’ people from the apartment.  If I am the new owner, I may still need to work at physically removing unwanted people from my building.  It is a crude analogy, but I believe it makes my point.

God is sovereign, yes.  But because of our free will, he cannot automatically evict the tenants living in the apartment building of our body because they have had legal access to their rooms (because they have a key.)  The keys in this analogy would be our sinful actions such as unforgiveness, idolatry, unconfessed sins, pride, sexual sins…. and such the like.

What God has to do is, through the power of the Holy Spirit, removes the legal right for the demonic to have access, which forces them to leave when commanded out by a child of God. In essence, the owner of the house gets the help of a lawyer who effectively writes up and enforces an eviction notice on the former tenants, which breaks their legal right to be there.  Then, they can legally be evicted by the police force 😆  (Wow, love that analogy! Have to encorporate it into my formal teaching!)

I will end this article here and take it up in the next post.  I will eventually explain how deliverance works in my experience and what happens when we stand against Satan in the name of Jesus Christ! In my next article, we will deal with strongholds and Satan’s legalism.

When two or three…

Had a great time in prayer on Wednesday night with my friends Carol and Angela.  Carol has been sensing a call to carry the gospel to the entire island, and gathering those who turn to Christ in small manageable churches (what others might call cells or house churches – I’m bucking the naming game.)  She’s asked me to come alongside and help where I can, especially in the area of deliverance.

So we decided that we would meet once a month and seek the face of the Lord for this new intiative that the Lord is starting.  Talk about explosive!

We met in Angela’s home, in an upstairs open room that she said was built for the sole purpose of thechurch assembling. It is a lovely house… I’d love one just like it 😀

We just started to worship – I spontaneously started to sing while the others were praying in tongues… we spent a time worshipping until I started prophesying.  My hands got hot, and then…

Carol’s vision is to have passionate worshippers meeting and building community where they are, and she constantly speaks of fire – the universal emblem of both passion and the Holy Spirit himself.  So when I started to spontaneously call fire down from heaven, she felt it!  The manifest presence of the Lord filled the room as I spoke of this first meeting as being one of commissioning and consecration; I said that it was our Pentecost experience, our Upper Room experience.    Yeah, I know I didn’t have to say it 😀 but it definitely fit – the room looks out onto a balcony with a wonderful view.  Anyway…

I started calling fire from heaven and she started to react as the power of God hit her.  I saw in the Spirit an outline of Barbados, with little fires spontaneously starting up all over the island.  I started striking my hands together sharply,  calling out that the Lord was striking the matches to light these fires.  By this time both she and Angela were under the power of God, being filled with his presence and responding by praising in tongues.

I continued calling for the fire of God, and they continued to respond with shaking and tongues.  I was sitting in my seat still. I hadn’t laid hands on them. I deliberately stayed in my place, although the warmth in my hands is usually a sign to me that the Lord is present and I am allowed to lay hands on those present.  I stayed where I was and told God, “It’s not about me. I don’t have to lay hands for you to touch them.”  In fact, I told them the same thing.

Then I spontaneously started to speak prophetically to Carol, commanding out fear of failure, fear of missing God or of not hearing him – and she started to heave!  At that point I went and gently touched her back while commanding out spirits of fear, intimidation, heaviness, depression… I stopped only to ask Angela to bring something for her to spit into as well as tissue.

I started to prophesy to Carol about her apostolic call to the work that we are praying about – both she and Angela go into the parish of St. Phillip and evangelize, and need a team around them to help disciple those who come to faith.  In our initial conversations about this work, Carol kept speaking about ‘flames of fire’ – that the power of the Holy Spirit would be like fire around those who would come to faith, or something like that…

As the heaving subsided, I led in breaking soul ties and generational curses, and prayed against the main open doors which allow evil spirits to enter – when I broke off occultic covenants, she started retching again.  God moved sovreignly and she was awesomely delivered!

I prayed for Angela as well after this, for the Lord to consecrate and set apart both of them for the work he has called them  to.  Again the presence of the Lord filled them as I asked for them to receive the ability to speak, not to people’s minds, but to their spirits.

After this, while we were composing ourselves, Carol felt led to release spiritual gifts on Angela as well.  I agreed, and encouraged her to lay hands on Angela herself.  We prayed for every spiritual gift necessary for Angela’s call to be released, and I started to prophesy that I already spoke of her gift when I prayed for the ability to speak past the natural mind and into the spirit of people.  I prophesied supernatural faith – and found myself saying that healings would take place, even of AIDS!

All glory be to the Father!  Yet more adventure in the Kingdom of God…. I’ll keep you posted when we pray again.

I’m thinking of the Scripture that says that when two or three gather in Jesus’ name that he is in the midst!  As I remarked to the others before we left… this was church! The church met, and Jesus showed up,  as he promised!

My friend Archie calls those things “God spots”  …. let’s have another, Father!

My prayer is that you all be released into your own divine encounters – your own God spots!  May we all have more powerful times with God!

Auctioning Off Virginity??????

Ok, this is not a usual post for me… but I had to post this.  There’s this 22 year old girl who is auctioning off her first sexual experience to the highest bidder.  The story can be read here.

Online bidding in the auction of a 22-year-old student’s virginity has reached $5.6 million after more than 10,000 responses, with the top offer so far coming from an Australian businessman.

I know sex sells but…. WHAT??????  😯

Miss Dylan told ninemsn the auction was a “business opportunity”.

“A lot of media are saying I’m doing this to pay for school — school is definitely one of the things I’m going to put this money to but I see this as a really good business opportunity,” Miss Dylan said.

“I wanted to get my masters degree and will put some of this money toward that but it was not the reason I decided to do it.”

Check how much the bids have grown:

Since then bids have rocketed from US$243,000 (A$356,000) to US$3.8 million (A$5.6 million) with an unnamed 39-year-old Australian businessman as the highest current bidder.

And this is her take on it:

“I’ve been offered to write a book, a possible movie deal and there’s other business opportunities coming my way from just putting this out there, so I’m not going to prematurely end something that can bring me a lot of money and success.”

I found this link while traversing the pages another online community I’ve joined up – the Daily Audio Bible –  there is a prayer request for this girl here.

I just thought I’d mention it here because there needs to be a serious prayer for the world – it is so depraved!  What are your thoughts on this?

Calling and Being a Priest….

I was reading this post at Kingdom Grace entitled “Calling

Here is the comment from Jerry who was replying to Grace’s post. In part, he said:

Every believer should wear the collar for a year, daily. There is a sacredness to being a believer that most feel is reserved for the clergy.

I never grew up Catholic and just about a year ago someone explained to me what a “parish” was. I thought it was a church building for some reason – but instead, its a geographical area. It hit me like a ton of bricks. What if I saw myself “priest” over this little geographical area the Lord had placed me in. How would I love and assist those around me? Could that area be some place I could bring the kingdom of God into? Hasn’t the Lord made me the priest of my workplace? Hasn’t the Lord made me the priest in my neighborhood?

I was stopped in my tracks by the realization – a ‘parish’ is a geographical area.  I never knew that! Like Jerry did, I somehow thought it was a building…. even although I’ve seen priests work hard out ‘on the field’.  As Jerry asked,  “What if I saw myself “priest” over this little geographical area the Lord had placed me in?”

What is your parish?  What ‘geographical area’ is your parish?  (May I stretch the definition of ‘geographical’ to not just mean physical location, but ‘area of influence’ – online as well as offline? Why of course you may! It is your blog, after all…. 😆 )

The Hand of God – Declaring Purpose!

For this new year, I am seeking God for the direction of the deliverance and prophetic ministry that the Lord as released me into.  Before this year, people were dealt with on a one on one basis, as requested.   The requests came locally by phone and referral, and internationally through this blog.

The purpose of the blog has always been to chronicle God’s powerful hand working in and through my life – I never expected people to come here asking me for prayer!  That being said, it has been a wonderful honour to serve others through this blog.  I have seen God move mightily through online interactions – for anyone reading this post who’s never been to this blog before, please run through the site and read past testimonies (For examples, click here, here, here and here.)

My children are still small, and I have responsibilities at my ‘day job’ as well, so I have had to think long and hard as to how to move forward without endangering life and limb by being so busy that I become no use for anyone.  So please pray for me that my strategy for balance is found quickly.

With that being said, I am now putting out publicly here on this page that for anyone reading who wants to be prayed for,  wants to have a friend to listen to and maybe be in a position to hear the Lord concerning any situation:  I am willing.  I have also seen demons flee in the name of Jesus by just my typing on a computer keyboard… testament to the fact that demons can read as well as talk!  I have prayed for people over Skype, MSN, Google Chat …. and I have seen the Lord move mightily over all forms of communicatiion!  Be blessed, and may the Lord meet you at the point of your need!

I look forward to praying with you! 😀

Happy New Year….. and I fed a beggar!

First, let me wish all of you reading a very happy New Year – may your baskets be full and may the Lord meet you all at the point of your need so you can truly know him as Jehovah Jireh!

I spent the majority of my day today cleaning up the kitchen.  With two small boys, cleaning is something that is done constantly.  If you let it, the constant cycle of tidy-dirty-tidy-dirty can wear you down…. I’m here at 10:21 pm and the house is finally quiet.  Now, if I can just get everything I need to do online done quickly so that I can go to bed and get ready for work tomorrow…..

Does anybody remember the beggar that I turned away on Christmas Eve?  Well, he came back today.  I was trying to get to the clinic with my younger son when he approached me, again asking for money.  He said he had to get something to eat before taking his medication, and he hadn’t eaten all day.  I decided to ask him if he wanted something to eat, as we couldn’t afford to give him any money – he said yes!  So, as I asked Lesanne to prepare a sandwich for him, the guy and I talked a little bit.  First, he told me his name was Neville. (He told me the last name, too, but it’s late… I’ve forgotten it!)  He told me that he used to work at our national hospital for about 25 years, but he had a nervous breakdown.  He also told me he used to be married – and he was married for 15 years before his divorce.  To something he said, I commented, “God is good.” and he asked if I was a Christian, to which I replied, “Yes.”

So, I have a name and some sort of initial contact.  He understands my reluctance to give money, and he even said to me, “You’re a cool fella.”  He even remembered that I was into computers, although I can’t remember ever telling him that; he said that I had told him…. wow.

So, there we have it.  I’m hoping that this connection will ultimately lead to Neville being helped off the path he’s in and being in a position to help at the right time.   I didn’t do it (help him) out of a sense of trying to get back on Somebody’s good side after pushing them away; Neville really does seem to need a friend, and Jesus went out of his way to be available to those who were traditionally scorned.

Pray for me, that my family is used to shine the light of Christ into Neville’s heart.

Pray for Neville, that the assistance we give will not be taken for granted.

Pray that God works on my heart to soften it towards his plight and not only give him things, but ultimately point him towards Christ as the Saviour.

Pray that God’s name be glorified through this! “The King will reply, ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.’ (Matt 25:40)
