Personal Devotions – Subduing the Lion!

Genesis 4:6-7

6 “Why are you so angry?” the Lord asked Cain. “Why do you look so dejected? 7 You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.”

The image of sin crouching at the door in this Scripture made me think of 1 Peter 5:8, “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”  Sin like a wild untamed animal sounds like a good metaphor;  you cannot tame sin, but you have to subdue it.  Interesting.  If I expand to 1 Pet 5:8 – 10 it brings more out of this related passage:

8Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 9Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

10And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

The action words there are important – Resist and Subdue. Speaks to violently overcoming the sin, like taking a wild animal like a lion and subduing it, being made its master.

And look – there is a promise of restoration once you have suffered a little while!

Lord help me to subdue sin in my life.  I need to be its master, not letting it overcome and subdue ME, which has been happening a lot recently.  I pray for your restoration, as I have been suffering more than a little while (in my humble opinion!) 😉  Thank you for opening your word to me! In Jesus’ name. AMEN

  1. Blessings and peace Bajan Poet, I am always satisfied in my soul when I stop by to view your page and blogs. I always look forward to the words you receive from the Lord. You are without a shadow of a doubt being edified and a true encouragement. The enemy sees your threat against his kingdom and will cause distractions to keep you from pressing forward. Your feet are already planted, dont let him shake you. Continue to be a beacon of hope for the rest of the body.

  2. Thank you very much, Tee (BTW – nice avatar! ) 🙂

Your encouragement is very needed and welcome!

  3. Robert.. I love your blog! Read the entries tonight and was inspired to ministry to a friend online that I had not communicated with for years. The Holy Spirit is amazing… I just yielded to him and knew I was to minister encouragement to the person and the person was in tears. So…. don’t stop going all out for Jesus, Robert. Galatians 6:9. Be not weary in well doing for in due season you will reap, if you faint not.
Your blog has cost me a good night’s rest (just HAD to read all of it!) but I love it! Thanks again for not being afraid to share openly and honestly your ups and downs in the road we are all travelling on towards Zion, in and through the blood of the Lamb! Take care.

    • You read ALL OF IT???? You DO know that’s over 2 years of entries, right???? WOW…. I’ll pray you get a supernatural upsurge of energy to replace that rest you lost … 😆 I’m so glad you enjoyed it… and that you were inspired to minister to someone online! So cool!
